A New Home for Maddy

Joan Barker rescued her first cat, Missy, from the side of the road. Missy was only five weeks old, and they spent 20 wonderful years together before Missy passed away earlier this year. Joan, now in her 70s, was looking for another kitty companion, when a friend mentioned PAWS' Seniors for Seniors program, where people in their golden years are matched with older pets and receive a discount on the adoption fee.

At PAWS, Joan met Maddy, the only senior cat at the shelter at the time. Maddy was experiencing the beginning stages of kidney failure, just like Joan's beloved Missy. Although this kind of medical issue might have fazed some people, Joan knew she would be up for the challenge. "Maddy was just so sweet, and I knew that I could help her."

Joan is happy to report that Maddy is doing great and adjusting well. Whenever people come to visit, Maddy welcomes them by jumping up on their laps to say hello. Maddy also enjoys leisurely strolls outside on a harness and leash with Joan. When Joan first brought Maddy home, she would stand by the door wanting to be let out, so Joan decided to take her for a walk, leash and all.

But Joan's favorite quality to share about Maddy is how vocal she is and what a funny meow she has. "When I was on the phone with my daughter, she asked if there were kids over because of all the noise in the background. I told her no, that's just kitty."
