Amberson animal cruelty trial continued to November
Keith Amberson, the Everett egg farmer accused of deliberately starving to death thousands of hens, is currently scheduled to go to trial to face charges of animal cruelty on November 13, 2000 in Everett District Court. If you have not already done so, call Snohomish County Prosecutor James Krider at (425) 388-3333 and encourage him to pursue conviction to the fullest extent of the law. "People Helping Animals" will be the theme of the PAWS Annual General Meeting, which will celebrate the staff, board, volunteers, and members who have devoted their lives to helping animals at PAWS. There will be plenty of animal-friendly food, fun, and awards to honor dedication and commitment in all the work that PAWS does. The Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 5th, from 7pm to 9pm in the Shoreline Room of the Shoreline Center, located at 18560 1st Avenue NE in Shoreline, WA. PAWS is attempting to more easily contact our supporters in the new technology age. In an effort to be able to contact you with action alerts regarding key legislative issues and important and timely campaigns, we would love to have your e-mail address. Electronic mail is a quick and cost effective way for PAWS to help animals while saving money for them at the same time. If you have an e-mail address, please e-mail it to us at jenniferh@paws.org so we can update our records. Beginning this fall, PAWS will be offering free classes to the public on a variety of companion animal, wildlife and advocacy topics. Join us to learn everything from enrichment for your indoor cat to an overview of anti-cruelty laws in Washington. All classes are held at the Cromwell room of the Shoreline Center, 18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155. These programs are free to the public, but space is limited, so reserve your seat now. Looking for the latest fall fashions? You can look great while being conscientious. Animal friendly fashions are "in" and so is compassion. It is very easy to find inexpensive, quality shoes, accessories and clothing that are stylish and free of animal suffering. You can choose from hundreds of styles of clothing, shoes, belts, bags, wallets and watchbands. Stylish alternatives include cotton, linen, rubber, ramie, canvas, and synthetic fibers. Another great perk is that vegan shoes and accessories are inexpensive—up to 60 to 75 percent cheaper than leather! A great tip to remember is when buying shoes, look inside the shoe’s heel or read the box for the identifying statements "all man-made materials" or "synthetic fibers." Chlorenol (also called Hydrolite) used in athletic and hiking shoes is an innovative new material that’s perforated for air flow. It will stretch around the foot with the same "give" as leather. It also provides good support and is machine washable. Leather alternatives can be found just about anywhere you might shop. Check out Payless Shoes, which offers a wide selection of non-leather shoes (call 800-444-7463 for a store near you). You can also find great selections of shoes, boots, clothing, belts, baseball gloves and jackets at Have the PAWS Photoflyer sent to your place of work! You can help the animals at PAWS by posting an 11" x 17" color flyer of PAWS animals. The Photoflyers are sent out to businesses every 2 weeks. Put your concern for wildlife to good use and join other dedicated volunteers at the PAWS Wildlife Department in Lynnwood or Olympia. A variety of shifts are available and requires a weekly commitment of three months. Donate your running automobile, boat or motorcycle to PAWS and receive the maximum value. PAWS is looking for vehicles that are running and will take little or no work to resell. If interested, please call (425) 787-2500 ext. 879. PAWS will coordinate a pick-up time. Please have your title and registration ready. PAWS will provide a receipt for you based on the value of the donation. As with any non-profit gift, it is wise to consult with an independent tax advisor.
