Opening Doors to a Kinder World

A person sees a frightened, lost dog trying to cross a busy street and is compelled to help. Compassion. A baby bird falls from a tree and someone takes the time to gently return her to the nest. Care. A neighbor witnesses an act of animal cruelty and instead of looking the other way, now knows a
number to report the crime. Empowerment.

Compassion, care and empowerment. These are the keys of humane education that open doors to a kinder world. The PAWS Humane Education Program connects with thousands of youth in our community each year emphasizing these values, and encouraging respect and understanding for humans, animals and the environment.

How do we do it?

"I have to see it to believe it." "It sounds exciting!" "If I do it once I'll remember forever." "There is no way I'll be able to sit still for a whole hour." We all learn differently, and that's why PAWS' educators engage students in a number of ways by incorporating the major learning styles:

• Visual, through multi-media presentations.
• Audible, with effective verbal communication.
• Tactile, through hands-on activities.
• Kinetic, by giving kids the opportunity to move around.

With tools such as games, videos, writing and drawing exercises, storytelling and craft projects, students learn these valuable lessons, and are excited to share their knowledge with others. Our programs encourage empathy and critical thinking.

Each child is also able to share a story or ask a question through "Dear PAWS" sheets. PAWS' educators personally respond to every question or story, which can total more than 1,500 in a single school year. Such personal attention is critical. Acknowledging each child lets her know that she
has been heard, that there are humane solutions, and that she is a valuable part of creating a better world for all.
