From the Heart

Dear Friends,

In May, PAWS welcomed 34 of the more than 370 neglected dogs seized from deplorable conditions at a suspected puppy mill operation near Kennewick, Washington. When the dogs arrived, our staff opened their arms to the small, frightened creatures.

In the following weeks, the dogs and puppies, all American Eskimo dogs or mixes of the breed, received much-needed medical attention, thorough grooming and behavior evaluations. Most went to experienced, compassionate foster homes to spend time in a quiet environment to recuperate and receive crucial socialization. Having spent their entire lives away from human contact in stacked, dirty cages, it is going to take time for these dogs to adapt to everyday life of being inside a home, walking on grass and even learning to play with toys.

Thanks to the gentle and patient care that PAWS' foster volunteers give these dogs, many have already been adopted into loving homes—a happy ending to a very dreadful beginning for these beautiful animals.

And our four Black Bear cubs had their happy ending, too. After one last medical exam to ensure their health, the cubs, who were in our care since last summer, were successfully released back into the wild. You can read more about them in "PAWS News and Notes" on the next page.

While we say goodbye to these bears, PAWS' busy season is in full swing with ducklings, baby beavers, seal pups, fawns, songbirds …and, of course, puppies and kittens. Every available space is in use.

My heartfelt thanks to our wonderful staff, volunteers and supporters everywhere who have helped create so many happy endings with their enduring dedication and commitment. Enjoy summer, and I hope to see you in September at PAWSwalk.
