They Multiply like Rabbits!

Photo of cat with rabbit ears. Every month, a steady stream of homeless puppies and kittens arrives at PAWS' shelter---and many older cats and dogs, too, some sick or weakened after delivering multiple litters throughout their lives. Always committed to combating this sad reality of overpopulation, PAWS was actually the first humane agency in Washington State to spay or neuter all animals adopted from our shelter, back in 1970.

Each surgery means fewer litters of kittens or puppies needing to find a home, and more tiny lives spared the cold, hunger and uncertainty of homelessness. And yet, while all animals adopted from PAWS are spayed or neutered, so many pets already in homes in the community remain "unfixed." The shelter team is determined to help these animals, too.

Research studies have revealed that the major barrier to pet lovers having their companion animals fixed is the cost of the surgery. So PAWS is happy to offer low-cost spay and neuter surgeries one day a week to low-income households during months when the demand for surgeries for animals in our shelter is slightly lower.

This formula has worked beautifully, with nearly 100 animals spayed or neutered during 15 days of surgery last fall, with weekly appointments continuing through this June. Clients have come from as far away as Silverdale and Snoqualmie, although most live in our local neighborhoods of Lynnwood and Everett.

Left to their own devices our beloved canine and feline friends can breed like bunnies, so please help us spread the word! Many veterinary hospitals in our area also offer lower-cost surgeries throughout the year. If you or someone you know is looking for low-cost options for spay and neuter surgeries, visit to learn more.
