Everyone loves a parade

Come cheer or join PAWS in the Greenwood Seafair Parade on Wednesday, July 26. Volunteers, rescued dogs and cat lovers will band together and bring PAWS’ passion for animal welfare to the community, not forgetting our messages promoting spay and neuter, and adoption. Building partnerships

PAWS' link to the veterinary community spans our history, and on May 16 this important relationship took another step forward when PAWS hosted our first vet open house. PAWS veterinarians—Dr. John Huckabee and Dr. Liz Helmer—welcomed peers from as far as Tacoma who enjoyed an inside glimpse into our medical programs. The evening was so successful that we hope to repeat the event next year, building more partnerships with our veterinary peers.

Operation Pink-footed Shearwater

In April, PAWS' expertise was sought for a unique research project led by the University of Washington and sponsored by OIKONOS Ecosystem Knowledge. PAWS Naturalist Kevin Mack joined a crew of scientists who journeyed to Santiago, Chile, and from there to remote Robinson Crusoe Island, in the Pacific Ocean. Learning more about the migration patterns of Pink-footed Shearwaters was the project’s goal, part of an ongoing study of the island’s ecosystem. Kevin helped place radio transmitters on the seabirds, who breed on only three islands and face a multitude of threats both on their breeding grounds and at sea.

Calling all kids!

In May, young people and their parents joined us on PAWS' campus for Kids Day, learning about and helping the animals in our care. The next Kids Day is scheduled for August 19, on National Homeless Animals Day. For more information and to RSVP, call 425.787.2500 x258 or email education@paws.org.

PAWS Baby Shower a huge success

The outpouring of support from across the community for PAWS' smallest patients this spring was nothing short of inspirational. In response to our call for help for the thousands of kittens, puppies, and baby wild animals in our care, PAWS received a total of 261 pounds of food— kitten milk formula, puppy chow, and infant diets for wildlife—as well as bowls, leashes, digital scales, heating pads, hot water bottles and more. Hearty thanks to everyone who helped shower the baby animals with love!

Meet author Emily Pottruck

Save the date and join friends of animals on Tuesday, August 1 at the Alexis Hotel in downtown Seattle from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. Author Emily Scott Pottruck will be reading from her new book—Tails of Devotion: A Look at the Bond Between People and Their Pets. Emily will be selling and signing copies, and all proceeds will benefit the animals at PAWS.

All aboard!

This spring PAWS welcomed four new members to our board of directors: Amy Del Rosario, Shanon Doolittle, Christine Paul, and Erica Santos—all passionate about animal welfare, and each bringing a great suite of skills to the Board. In May, Steve Weaver—our board president for the past two years—passed the gavel to incoming president, Arden Clise, with Melinda Williams stepping into the vice president position. Thank you, Steve, for your leadership and energy, and a hearty welcome to our new officers and board members!
