Facility Complaints

Here are some pointers on problems to look for in various types of facilities and whom to contact if you have a complaint:

Zoos:
  • What to look for: Are the animals in good health? Can people get too close to the animals? What form of population control is used? What happens to surplus animals?
  • What laws apply: Animal Welfare Act and Washington State Anti-Cruelty Laws
  • Who inspects: USDA/APHIS and local law enforcement
Dog Breeders and Livestock Auctions:
  • What to look for: Physical condition of animals, overcrowding, is there food and clean water, are the kenneling areas sanitary
  • What laws apply: Animal Welfare Act and Washington State Anti-Cruelty Laws
  • Who inspects: USDA/APHIS and local law enforcement
Animal Shelters:
  • What to look for: Conditions of the kennels, method of euthanasia, adequate veterinary care
  • What laws apply: Washington State Anti-Cruelty Laws
  • Who inspects: Local law enforcement and county and state officials
Pet Stores:
  • What to look for: Physical health of animals, sanitation, overcrowding, selling endangered pets
  • What laws apply: Animal Welfare Act, Washington State Anti-Cruelty Laws, health regulations
  • Who inspects: USDA/APHIS, local law enforcement, state health department
