Solving Common Problems with Your Pet
At PAWS we believe in making lifetime commitments to companion animals. In support of that, we offer a variety of resources to assist you in addressing many common problems people face with the companion animals in their family.
Moving/Challenges with Landlord
Moving is stressful even in the best of circumstances. Many people choose to give up their pet before they move because they're not sure how to find pet-friendly housing, travel with the animal, or help the animal adjust to a new home. PAWS can help you move with your pet by providing the following information: Pet-Friendly Housing Listings, When You Move, Tips for Renters and Helping Your Cat Adjust to a New Home.
Pet Behavior Problems
Does your dog dig holes, chase cars, bark too much, or chew on furniture? Does your cat not use the litter box, scratch furnishings, or yowl too much? There are medical or training solutions to virtually every behavior problem, if you are willing to work to solve them. Call PAWS' free Behavior Helpline at 425.787.2500 x860 – leave a detailed message describing your pet and the behavior you would like to change, as well as your contact information. A behavior counselor will call you back within 48 hours to help you solve the problem. Because many behavior problems are caused by medical issues, your veterinarian can also be a great resource. Find a professional trainer, behaviorist or veterinarian. PAWS also offers dog training classes for a variety of levels.
New Baby in the Home
Read our pets and babies fact sheet to learn how to address this important change so the new baby is welcomed and accepted by the resident dog or cat.
Pet Allergies
Read a step-by-step instruction sheet on how to live comfortably with pet allergies. Simply bathing your pet with a product such as Allerpet (sold at numerous veterinary clinics) and following some simple cleaning procedures in your home can ease the suffering of the allergic person and keep your pet in your home. Your doctor can also refer you to an allergy specialist to work with you or your pet.
Still need help?
If you feel you have exhausted all options to keep your animal, or are helping an animal other than your own, please read the information about placing an animal in a new permanent home. We provide this information to help you place your dog or cat into a new and loving home as soon as possible.
