On December 19, thanks to your emails, letters and phone calls, the Snohomish County Council voted unanimously to prevent horse slaughter from returning to the community by passing a new ordinance that would ban the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
PAWS testified in support of the new law, which had the combined support the Horse Harbor Foundation, Pasado’s Safehaven and other Washington-based animal welfare agencies. The vast majority of citizens who spoke at the public hearing favored the ordinance proposed by Snohomish County Councilmember, Dave Somers, a horse owner himself.
The ordinance makes the slaughter of a horse for human consumption unlawful and carries a fine of up to $1,000 and jail time up to 90 days.
