PAWS Notes
PAWS’ campaign to end the Omak Suicide Race enters the final stretch! Part of the Omak Stampede, the race has killed at least 20 horses since 1983. Hundreds of people have joined PAWS’ Suicide Erasers action team. One Suicide Eraser started an online petition that gathered nearly 2,500 signatures by press time, and gains more every day.
Our partners at the International Fund for Horses, American Humane Association, American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and other organizations have also encouraged their members to speak up for innocent horses.
Our combined efforts have convinced Wal-Mart and Crown Royal to do the right thing and withdraw their sponsorship. NAPA Auto Parts and Pepsi have publicly condemned the race and voiced their disapproval to their independently owned and operated subsidiaries in Omak that continue to be sponsors.
Incredulously, this race is allowed to take place in a state that, earlier this year, enacted some of the most stringent animal cruelty laws in the nation. The race is scheduled for August 11-14 and it’s not too late to help end this deadly abuse. Washington residents can write or call the governor, local representatives, senators and congressional delegates. Sample letters, race facts, history, a link to the petition and talking points can be found at www.paws.org/outreach/campaigns/omak.php.
Together we can save the horses of Omak.
