In the late 70s, a friend of mine was lamenting the cruelty in modern human civilization. In his despair came a hope that by the year 2000 humans could set some basic common goals for ourselves as a species.

Something basic. Something surely we could all agree we'd want to put behind us in these modern times. We were working in the peace movement at the time, so his wish was that we humans could all agree to stop the practice of torture.

I looked forward to the conversations about the new millennium, about our aspirations for the future

I had hoped that the year 1999 would be one of reflection. That we'd be inspired by the advent of the new millennium. To think about how we live with each other, with the other creatures and with the Earth. To see the turning of the calendar page as an opportunity to create a new year's, new century's, new millennium's resolution.

Yet, as we approach the end of the millennium, all the talk is about Y2K. We've been focused on how the change of date will affect our computers and the mechanical and financial systems we rely on.

What a distraction!

As the millennium ends, let's look around at the civilization we've created. Is there a kinder, more compassionate and less destructive way to live? Humans are now, more than ever, aware of the impact our lives the other animals and on the ecosystem. The only thing greater than our awareness is our potential for change.
