Volunteer Coordinator
Accountable to: Public Affairs Manager
Type of Position: Part-time, 20 hours per week
Salary: Starting at $11.50 per hour

To coordinate the Development & Community Relations (DCR) Department volunteer program.
In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for DCR volunteer programs, including the recruitment, hiring, orientation, scheduling, evaluation, and dismissal of volunteers and interns for programs including fundraising events, outreach activities, humane education and advocacy campaigns.
- Works closely with members of the DCR team to determine volunteer needs on a regular basis or for one-time projects/events.
- Working with volunteer coordination staff in other PAWS’ departments, develops and implements programs to recognize, motivate, educate and provide opportunities for advancement for volunteers, and collaborates to enhance the overall volunteer experience at PAWS.
- Along with other volunteer coordination staff, responsible for keeping the organization up-to-date on volunteer management trends.
- Maintains timely and accurate records of individual, department and total volunteers, including contact information of volunteers, hours worked and tasks performed.
- Other duties as assigned.
The Volunteer Coordinator works under the general guidance of the Public Affairs Manager and is expected to pursue the established duties without detailed supervision. Works collaboratively with other department staff as appropriate.
Written performance evaluations will be given after the first three months and first 12 months of work and annually thereafter.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time working at a computer. Work is performed in and out of the PAWS facility.
- Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, and be able to read, write and speak clearly in English so that written and verbal instructions can be followed.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills, a professional, tactful, mature and sincere attitude, and be able to represent the mission, goals and the policies of PAWS in a creative, credible and energetic manner.
- Must have experience in recruiting, training, and managing volunteers and/or interns.
- Must be able to work maturely and respectfully with diverse groups of people.
- Must be organized and flexible, able to balance concurrent projects and adjust to rapid, changing needs.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington driver’s license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses.
- Must be knowledgeable and comfortable with computer systems used in operations and have basic computer skills, including database skills.
- Knowledge of and commitment to animal welfare issues strongly preferred.

Humane Educator
Accountable to: Development & Community Relations Director

Reporting to the Director of Development & Community Relations, PAWS Humane Educator is responsible for planning, implementing and managing the PAWS Humane Education program, which works to inspire children and adults to demonstrate compassion towards all animals. PAWS Humane Educator promotes a clear and positive image of PAWS so that the community feels pride and ownership of the organization, its mission and vision.
- Manage and implement the PAWS Humane Education program. Build on its success; recommend opportunities to be even more effective.
- Schedule and facilitate classroom workshops at public and private schools in, but not limited to, the following districts: Everett, Mukilteo, Edmonds, Northshore, Shoreline, Seattle and Lake Washington.
- Manage monthly Kid’s Days on PAWS Main Campus.
- Evaluate PAWS’ comprehensive suite of classroom workshops and other educational opportunities on a quarterly basis, recommending and implementing improvements or expansions to the programs, in order to have the greatest impact.
- Recruit, train and supervise volunteer educators and/or interns to assist in delivering PAWS Humane Education programs.
- Manage the development of content for the PAWSkids.org website, including Youth Hero pages and Pet of the Week Partnership.
- Develop and maintain the Humane Education Program annual budget and work plan. Prepare monthly reports.
- Coordinate internally with other departments on the development of education programs and materials for adults and children.
- Coordinate and conduct PAWS campus tours for youth groups, respond to public enquiries, represent PAWS Humane Education Program at various community events including formal presentations and informal tabling opportunities, mentor young people completing service projects to benefit PAWS.
- Write the quarterly newsletter, Kids Helping Animals; write other articles and editorials for external and internal publications about humane education or related issues.
- Assist development staff in writing grants and securing funds to enhance PAWS Humane Education Program.
- Develop strategic partnerships across the organization and the community to further the goals of the PAWS Humane Education.
- Keep up-to-speed on regional and national humane education trends and successful approaches in order to bring new perspectives and ideas to PAWS’ programs.
- Perform other duties, as requested by the Department Director.
Work is performed both in and out of the office or classroom and in the community. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, including working at a computer.

- A minimum of three year’s successful experience in education, advocacy, program development, and/or public outreach. Experience with animal welfare organizations is preferred.
- Experience working with school-aged children a must.
- Experience working with and coordinating multiple tasks using volunteer resources.
- Excellent writing and communication skills, including a demonstrated proficiency in public speaking and presentations.
- Attention to detail; flexibility and sense of humor a must.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses.

Director, Development & Community Relations
Accountable to: Executive Director
Type of Position: Full-time

Reporting to the Executive Director, PAWS Director of Development and Community Relations is responsible for overall strategic leadership of planning, implementing and administering programs to attract philanthropic support and community awareness of the organization. The DCR Director manages PAWS fund development, advocacy, outreach and education programs to ensure a sustainable and growing funding base, and provide the community with compelling and practical information and tools to make a kinder world for animals. The DCR Director is a member of PAWS Management Team, and works collaboratively to effectively promote and advance PAWS’ mission.
- Lead the development, implementation and analysis of a full complement of development programs that include: annual and major gifts, planned giving and other major fundraising initiatives; corporate donations, grants, direct mail, online giving, and special fundraising events, such as Wild Night and PAWSwalk.
- Oversee the day-to-day department operations including budget, personnel, and programs.
- In collaboration with the ED and marketing team, promote a clear and positive image of PAWS, its values and vision. Spearhead and supervise outreach activities and community relations programs and materials to increase awareness and support of PAWS work and mission across a wide range of audiences and constituencies.
- Lead, coordinate, and train board, staff and volunteers to assist in fund development efforts.
- Develop and implement strategies for long-range goals.
- Ensure timely donor recognition. Supervise donor information and tracking systems; perform donor base analysis for development of strategic goals.
- Provide staff support to Board Development & Marketing and Programs & Services committees.
- Stay abreast of trends and best practices in the field of development, advocacy, education and outreach as it applies to PAWS.
- Advance programs that involve and empower PAWS members statewide to work effectively on behalf of animals.
- Oversee the department’s role as consultant and resource to animal care departments in developing and promoting advocacy for companion animals and wildlife.
- Perform all other duties the Executive Director from time to time may prescribe or that would be in the best interest of the organization.
Work is performed both in and out of the PAWS facility and may require sitting for long periods of time.
- At least three years successful experience directing fundraising efforts for nonprofit organizations, and effective supervisory/management experience. Five or more years of hands-on fundraising, marketing and community relations experience. Experience with and passion for animal welfare is highly desirable.
- Measurable history of fundraising achievements in major, annual and planned giving, corporate and foundation grants, and managing successful events. Capital campaign experience desirable.
- A college degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience coordinating multiple tasks using volunteer resources, especially training and inspiring board and committee members in development, advocacy and education activities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, presentation and astute listening skills; expresses ideas with clarity, confidence and sensitivity.
- Experienced with database management.
- A sincere interest and belief in the philosophy of animal welfare; a creative and dynamic approach to fundraising; and the ability to provide training and assistance to a wide range of staff and volunteer associates
- Must be able to organize priorities according to changing needs and develop effective communications strategies with the public in accordance with PAWS policies and procedures. Media and community relations experience is highly desirable.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses.

The Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a Northwest leader in animal welfare since 1967, is seeking candidates for its board of directors. PAWS is a non-profit organization that shelters homeless animals, rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife, and through progressive outreach and education programs, helps people understand the intrinsic value of animal life. Experience in fundraising, finance, marketing, legal affairs, architecture & facilities planning are especially valued at this time, however, all interested parties concerned about animal welfare are encouraged to respond.
