Completing the Process

The PAWS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center receives hundreds of orphaned, injured and ill baby songbirds every year. They can be demanding patients, especially in large numbers, who require almost constant feeding and care. Fortunately, PAWS has a dedicated team of volunteers called Bird Nursery Caretakers, or BNCs to provide that feeding and care. The end result of their work is the return of healthy, independent wild birds to their natural habitat. Whenever possible, we try to provide volunteers with the opportunity to participate in the release of the animals for whom they have cared. PAWS’ BNCs had three such opportunities in July and August on group bird releases that were arranged especially for them. Below are a few snapshots from those group releases as well as a few images documenting the progression of young birds through the wildlife center.

PAWSwalk 2006 will be on Saturday, September 9 th at Seattle’s Magnuson Park.

Team “Wild Things” has raised over $2,000 so far, but with less than a month to go until the big event we still need nearly $5,000 to meet the team’s goal. As advertised in the last issue of Wild Again, I have given my team a special challenge this year. If we raise $7,000 or more, I have agreed to "reward" them by singing a Karoke song of their choice in a public venue. A little humiliation is a small price to pay for helping out the animals!
