Watch those windows
Coming soon to a flyway near you---the fall migration of wild birds. As the sun changes its position in the sky and food becomes more scarce, birds take their cues to head south. Many species of songbirds, swifts and birds of prey travel long distances to southern wintering grounds in Mexico and South America. Other species travel relatively short distances from the higher elevations of the Cascades and Olympics to the lowlands surrounding them. Still others come from areas further north to spend the winter in our communities. No matter how long their journey, all of them face the challenge of maneuvering safely through human development.

Window collision is one of the most common causes of injury for birds received by PAWS during migration. Birds who see a reflection of the sky or vegetation in the window think there is a clear path. This, unfortunately, leads them to fly directly into the window, resulting in broken wings, head trauma or attacks by cats or dogs after falling to the ground. You can help prevent these injuries by adding decals to or hanging wind socks in front of windows—anything that helps minimize the reflection. Fall for something sweet
With fall just around the corner, here is a recipe for a yummy vegan dessert, shared with us by PAWS' Donor Relations Coordinator Vicki Nelson. No animals will be harmed in the making of this cake—enjoy!

Vicki's World Famous Spice Cake

Preheat oven to 350°

Combine:
2 cups Flour
1¼ cups Sugar
2½ teaspoons Baking Powder
½ teaspoon Salt
¼ teaspoon Cloves
¼ teaspoon Allspice
¼ teaspoon Nutmeg (freshly ground is best)
½ teaspoon Cinnamon
1½ teaspoons Ener-G brand egg replacer (found at most natural grocery stores)

Cut in (use two butter knives or a pastry cutter/blender):
1/3 cup Soy Margarine (Vicki prefers Earth Balance brand) softened

Then stir in:
1 cup Soy Milk
1½ teaspoons pure Vanilla extract
2 Tablespoons Water

Mix until combined, but do not over mix. Pour batter into a 9" x 8" baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. For cupcakes, bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool, then sprinkle with vegan powdered sugar and/or cinnamon, or top with vegan frosting. This cake is also fabulous with a scoop of vanilla soy ice cream.

Judge the deed, not the breed
Any poorly-socialized dog can be at risk of harming humans or other animals. But when a poorly-socialized dog has a strong, muscular build—or has been trained to be aggressive—the outcome can be devastating, as in the case of recent news reports about injuries caused by pit bulls and pit bull mixes.

The American Pit Bull Terrier may be one of the most misunderstood of all canine breeds. And with good socialization, exercise, and responsible care, these handsome dogs make wonderful companions, despite their "tough image."

At PAWS, we meet, play with and adopt out dozens of friendly, loving, loyal and beautiful pit bulls and pit bull mixes every year. There's Miles, who lives happily with another PAWS dog, and Stuart who shares his home with rescued Cockatoos. Carbon, China and Handsome were highlighted in our spring 2004 PAWS magazine. Beyond their square heads and muscled bodies, they are devoted dogs simply looking for a place to belong and be loved.

This fall your employer may invite you to participate in its workplace giving program. What is workplace giving? It's an efficient and convenient way to make charitable donations to organizations you care about.
