PAWSwalk- A Roaring Success!
Thanks to the more than 850 PAWS supporters who laced up their shoes in support of PAWS on Saturday, Oct. 2! It was a gorgeous, sunny day and everyone involved including participants, sponsors, PAWS staff and volunteers all commented on the fun being had. The highlight of the day though was the estimated $100,000 raised to care for, support, rehabilitate and place the animals at PAWS. Thank you so much for your support and involvement- we're lucky to be part of such a caring, compassionate, responsive community!

Cougar Cub Update
PAWS has been inundated with requests for information regarding the status of the orphaned cougar cubs PAWS has been caring for since September. Because the cougars were too young to be successfully rehabilitated and released to the wild, the Department of Fish and Wildlife has decided to give them to the Memphis Zoo where they will spend the rest of their lives in a 1,500 square foot enclosure. This hand-off is expected to happen sometime this week so stay tuned to www.paws.org for details.

Groundbreaking Animal Abuse Treatment Plan Implemented
On October 1, 2004, two Pierce County boys, Troy Loney and Steven Paulson, were sentenced to 9 months in jail following their conviction on first-degree animal cruelty. The boys were convicted after they tied a stray Siberian husky to a tree and shot her repeatedly with the same bow and arrow last year.

As part of their sentence, both are required to undergo psychiatric assessment and must also complete the AniCare Model treatment program, introduced in the Pacific Northwest by PAWS and the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County only two months ago. The implementation of the AniCare Model is a true win for animals; it proves that the legal community has officially recognized the link between animal abuse and violence against humans and understands the gravity of such crimes. Implementation of the AniCare model ensures that the criminals that commit crimes against animals will not be let back out onto the streets without follow up treatment to address the underlying problem that makes them a risk to both humans and animals. Both Loney and Paulson have prior convictions ranging from child molestation to forgery and assault.

PAWS congratulates Bob Walters, Educator for the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County, for his touching testimony regarding the empathy that that both boys clearly lack and for educating the judge on the AniCare model, making it a clear choice for treatment. PAWS also thanks Prosecuting Attorney Dennis Ashman for giving this case the attention and dedication it required.

Please be sure to share your comments on this case with your local newspaper. This is a big win for the animals and people endangered by such criminals. We need to make sure such victories continue! Send a letter to the editor of your local paper:
