It's Time to Walk the Walk!
PAWS supporters are well known for both walking the walk AND talking the talk- and the best time for both is upon us! The 13th annual PAWS Walk kicks off at 8am Saturday, Oct. 2, at Seattle's beautiful Magnuson Park. Bring your friends, family and canine companions and help raise money for the lifesaving programs at PAWS! For complete details please visit www.pawswalk.net. We look forward to seeing you there!!

Circus Volunteers Rule!
Thank you to everyone who came to the Everett Events Center to speak up for the neglect and abuse of animals at the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus! Your efforts, and all those hours in the rain, had a huge impact. Not only did we help send a clear message to the circus, we were able to educate hundreds of local citizens about the plight of wild animals in captivity.

Our outreach efforts to sponsors of the circus performances convinced Brien Motors in Everett to never be associated with circus advertising in the future. Please write or call them and say thanks for being such progressive and compassionate leaders in our community!

Geese People Flying South for the Winter
Volunteer work for the Seattle Goose Program came to an end just after Labor Day. We had considered working in the parks until the end of this month, but given the weather and sudden drop-off in beach attendance, we elected to accept the Parks Department's offer to put down our brooms and lasers for the year.

Over the next several weeks we'll be meeting with our contacts at Parks to assess this year's program and devise a plan for next year. While we won't have an official report of the program's results for a couple more weeks, the Parks Department was thrilled with the significant improvements seen at the parks in which we worked.

Every one of our pilot sites saw greatly reduced "goose damage" as well as a dramatic reduction in citizen complaints about cleanliness. Indeed, several park patrons contacted the city to express their compliments and thanks to the volunteers for the clean parks. People are still able to enjoy seeing beautiful Canada geese at places such as Green Lake and Matthews Beach, but thanks to our phenomenal volunteers, the birds are no longer blamed for fouling the beaches and lawn areas.

As we look toward next year and the ways we'd like to see the program expand and evolve, here's what we're tentatively planning:

  • Expand the program to eight parks- the existing five plus three others. Candidates for addition include Golden Gardens, Sand Point Magnuson, and Seward.
  • Launch a trial boat/dog-hazing program at Green Lake. Borrowing a page from GeesePeace's successful model, we'll take dog harassment one step further by putting a life-jacketed dog and his/her human companions in a small motorized boat, which will follow the geese all over the lake until they are persuaded to leave for less problematic sites.
  • Continue to work cooperatively with Parks to find ways to ensure that ALL goose nests are treated. Also, we'll try to keep nesting pairs out of Green Lake in the spring so that no new goslings are added to that area. (This year, 20 goslings were seen at Green Lake, and we don't want to see a repeat of that situation in 2005.)
  • Introduce another harassment technique: Our partners at The HSUS are working on getting us a new-fangled "scarecrow" of sorts. It's a kite that mimics that sounds and flight patterns of predatory birds, and causes geese to vamoose in a hurry. Now, if we can just get this flying robot bird to shoot laser beams while scooping poop...
As hoped, the success of the first year of this program is yielding benefits that should ultimately result in an end to the killing of geese in our region. You've helped us prove humane methods work, and that message is really beginning to take hold.

On behalf of everyone at PAWS, The HSUS, our new partners at Seattle Parks and Recreation, and especially the geese you helped protect, THANK YOU for making the first year of the Seattle Goose Program such a smashing success! We hope you'll join us again in 2005.
