Oppose Sports Complex that Would Destroy Wildlife Habitat at Magnuson Park
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Parks Superintendent Ken Bounds plan to construct a 15-field sports complex over 37 acres of Magnuson Park, of which 11 fields occupying 22 acres will be lighted. This sports field complex will have irreversible effects on wildlife, habitat, and wetlands in Magnuson Park.

The plan calls for over 650,000 watts of light, fields lit until 11:00 p.m. every night of the year, and over 2,200 additional vehicles traveling in and out of Magnuson Park every day. The proposal also includes man-made wetlands to be constructed elsewhere in the park to replace the natural ones that will be covered by artificial turf. Unfortunately, national statistics demonstrate that only 20% of synthetic wetlands are successful.

As home to hundreds of species of birds and wildlife, Magnuson Park is designated as one of Seattle’s Environmentally Critical Areas for Wildlife. However, according to Seattle’s own Hearing Examiner, the proposed complex "would result in long-term conversion of wildlife habitat to developed uses. Habitats would be converted and lost."

Please contact the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners TODAY, and urge them to oppose plans for this sports complex and thereby preserve the natural beauty of one of Seattle’s premier waterfront parks. Please let Board members know about Resolution 30530, passed in October 2002 by Seattle City Council, which notes the lack of data showing unmet demand for sports fields.

Use OPPOSE MAGNUSON PARK PLAN in the subject line. Address e-mails to Parks Board members, care of the Parks Board Coordinator, Sandy Brooks, at Sandy.Brooks@seattle.gov. Sandy will forward e-mails to the Parks board members.

The Parks Board will meet tomorrow night, Thursday, September 25, 7:00 pm to discuss and possibly vote on this proposal. Please attend to show strength of numbers of people who oppose these plans. Public comment will not be taken, but feel free to hold signs or wear badges. Department of Parks and Recreation:
