Quillayute Valley School District Superintendent and School Board go against District Policy in felony animal cruelty case
A Forks High School student was convicted of felony animal cruelty in Clallam County for abducting a dog from a fellow student's house, wrapping fish line around the dog's neck, and throwing him over a bridge to his death. In accordance with the Forks High School (FHS) athletic code, the student was suspended from athletics for one year, starting summer 2002.

The Quillayute Valley School District Superintendent, Frank Walter, defied FHS's athletic code and reinstated the student's athletic eligibility prior to his completion of a full year of suspension for a felony offense. This decision was justified on the presumption that sports would allow the student to be monitored more closely and would keep him out of trouble. The Quillayute School Board agreed with Walter's decision.

Please contact the superintendent and school board members to share your dismay with their decision. Permission to play baseball is a reward, not a punishment, and does not serve to reinforce the message to this student that his crime is reprehensible. Please also mention studies by the F.B.I and U.S. Department of Justice demonstrating the link between individuals who perpetrate acts of violence to animals and humans.

Oppose Nike's dog fighting ad
Nike is currently running a disturbing TV commercial in which a game of pick-up basketball is mixed with shots of professional ballplayer Jason Kidd (New Jersey Nets) practicing in a gym, conveying the message that basketball is hip and exhilarating and that Nike is associated with those qualities. Suddenly, two fighting dogs appear, squaring off and snarling. This continues for a couple of seconds, then back to the basketball montage, followed by the Nike symbol. Basically, Nike is equating dogfighting with basketball, urban hipness, excitement, and manliness, thus legitimizing a vicious and criminal practice on network television, for the company's financial benefit.

Please contact Nike Consumer Affairs at 1-800-344-6453 (Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. - 4:50 p.m. Pacific Time) or go to http://swoosh.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/swoosh.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php and send an email to let Nike how important it is to not legitimize or glamorize the practice of dogfighting.
